When Winter Wins

I feel like I need to write this post, partly because I don’t want to suffer in silence, but mostly because I don’t remember feeling this way last year and I want something to look back on a year from now and either feel justified in my convictions, or corrected.

I was having a conversation this weekend with my family and I am convinced that this winter feels like the longest I’ve been through that I can remember.

winer-weather-snow.jpg

I don’t recall ever feeling this defeated at the sight of snow. I am crushed by these constant low temperatures, and I want to stay in my pajamas all day. I don’t however, but I don’t see an end in sight.

Even the plus temperatures that taunt me on the forecast just don’t seem real anymore. I just don’t believe it.

I long to step out on to the amazing deck my husband built last summer. I want to play in the dirt of my garden and pull weeds. I can’t wait to smell that distinct barbecue smell of my husband grilling, and I need to step outside into the great outdoors where my kids have a big yard to help them use up their energies.

We all feel this way in our house. Even our cats are becoming unbearable. Four days and counting until the promise of a change in weather.

Hold on just a little longer.

That is the most common thing I hear these days – everyone is done with winter. Hopefully some relief is just around the corner.

I literally feel like I am going a little crazy this winter.. I seriously cannot take it anymore. I see hwo people suffer from SAD now – the constant cold and lack of sun has me feeling so down int the dumps… 90 days of this with majority being below -25C. It’s torture

I’m right there with you. A co-worker said she read something that said this winter in N America is the worst in 60 years. I don’t doubt it.

I’m ready for higher temps, but I’m so discouraged by the melting and re-freezing. The ice has been especially awful this year.

    • Sheri Landry Mar 9, 2014, 11:00 am

I believe that too Robin. Today is warm (above zero at least). I’m sure there will be another freeze. I’m enjoying the warm while it lasts now.

so with you! the dogs are stir crazy, we’re stir crazy – and what’s CRAZY is that we’re actually pretty active in the winter, despite the cold – it’s the length!!! I’m over it! LOL so glad to know I’m not alone:) soon enough it will be Spring! and the extra hour of sunlight this weekend will be extra delightful

Aw! I know it’s hard to get motivated when everything is coated in a blanket of white. We are so lucky out here (in Victoria) we’ve only had a couple of days of snow, just enough for the kids to have a day of tobogganing. Soon enough though yours will melt and you’ll be out there, until then take care.

You’re definitely not alone, Sheri…this winter has been worse for me than all my winters spent in the north! It’s just been so long and we got such a huge dump of snow so early on and with the -30 and -40 we haven’t been out to play in what seems like two weeks!

I hear it’s supposed to break a bit this upcoming week. I hope!

I get it girl. But, that is why I took up cross country skiing! LIFE CHANGER.

    Hi there,
I think we all feel the same. I’m heading on a Disney Cruise in 4 days and it can’t come any sooner! #sickofwinter! Hoping for better weather soon!! Take care!

I totally get it. This winter has been never ending. One thing that helps (according to happiness research) is having something to look forward to. Apparently the value of a vacation isn’t just the trip. Something like 50% of its benefits are derived before the trip. Just thinking about going somewhere warm, seeing an old friend or doing something new cause a boost. Hang in there!

Thanks Jody. This summer brings a lot of work in the yard, but I absolutely love it, so I have been focusing on that. Puttering around while our girls play and dinner cooks on the BBQ = my oasis. I will hold tight to that.

Too funny!! My husband just said on Saturday “I think this winter has finally got to me and taken over” We have been slacking on our Forever Home project and blame it all on the winter weather.

I feel the same way. I live in Alberta too, near Calgary. I even grew up in this area and thought I was conditioned to this weather. But seriously, it has been a l-o-n-g one. The recent freezing temperatures have beed ridiculous. I feel badly for the kids who are probably having indoor recesses and so need to be outside everyday. You are allowed to feel the way you feel. That deck does look very nice and I am sure you will be able to enjoy it.

    • Sheri Landry Mar 3, 2014, 10:58 pm

I agree Thea. My daughter has had way too many indoor recesses. I am counting down the days until I can sit on our deck and enjoy our yard though.

Hang in there Sheri, spring/summer has got to come soon! I wish I could send you warm weather, but all I can do is think of warm thoughts for your family. Miss you all, hugs and kisses, love you….

    • Sheri Landry Mar 3, 2014, 10:59 pm

I would take warm weather from you any day. Especially that nice Vegas air. We miss you too.

  • Heather Mar 3, 2014, 3:43 pm

Really….this has been the wost winter I’ve ever been through! I totally get that ‘I can’t go out there’ feelings and I remember once I almost did cry when I had to go out and shovel the drive A G A I N. It’s time for some warmth!!

    • Sheri Landry Mar 3, 2014, 4:00 pm

Thanks Heather. It is always nice to know I am not alone. I have been on the verge of tears just thinking about stepping outside one more time. It is time for the warm weather.

Feeling the same way here in Winnipeg. Don’t remember winter ever being this miserable. Any tips for those of us not expecting nicer weather soon? :)

    • Sheri Landry Mar 3, 2014, 3:59 pm

I’ve been watching Winnipeg temperatures Nadine. You have definitely had it worse with freezing temperatures this year, but not by much. It feels like Canada slipped into a deep freeze. The only tips I can think of are to start planning for the summer. Gardening, design, and daydreaming always make me feel better.

  • Merry120 Mar 3, 2014, 2:48 pm

I feel the same, Sheri! I think it is all the snow that we got in December. Usually winter isn’t THAT bad until January so December makes it feel like we should be coming out of it by now. Unfortunately we still have at least one, maybe two months to go. Ugh, ugh, ugh. Hang in there!!!!

    • Sheri Landry Mar 3, 2014, 3:56 pm

Thanks Merry. The extra snow and the amount of days below -20 have been too much to take. Bring on the summer.
