The moment our girls first saw the original trailer for The Secret Life of Pets, they were hooked. Any pet owner will tell you, each of their fur family members is unique. We are a family of animal-lovers so a movie about what our pets do when we are not around was a must see for everyone and it did not disappoint.
The Secret Life of Pets is a comedy about the lives our pets lead when we are not around. It’s the fifth fully animated feature-film collaboration by Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures and is available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand December 6, 2016 (also available on Digital HD November 22, 2016).
Max, voiced by Louis C.K., is a loyal terrier living a perfectly happy existence until his owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper) brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet) a big, boisterous mutt she finds at the shelter. When Max and his unruly new “roommate” slip away from their dog-walker, they find themselves lost in the urban jungle of New York City. In an attempt to stay ahead of animal control and a rebel band of abandoned pets led by an unhinged bunny named Snowball (Kevin Hart), they put aside their differences to survive the epic journey back home.
We have a dog who loves to bark at everything (like Mel) and a cat who reminds us of Chloe. Our girls and I have been busy planning a movie party worthy of our fur family members and I’ve included some of our activities and snack options here to get you started on your very own Secret Life of Pets party.
Homemade treats for pets
Natural pet treat recipes are found all over the internet. Since our dog is a vegetable/yam lover, we will be making some yam treats for him. We will be choosing one of these recipes to make:
- Sweet potato dog treats: https://snapguide.com/guides/make-sweet-potato-dog-treats/
- Sweet potato jerky: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/eating/recipes/animal_treats/sweet-potato-jerky-dogs.html
- Microwave sweet potato treats: http://thriftyjinxy.com/make-your-own-homemade-sweet-potato-dog-treats-in-the-microwave-recipe/
He will also be snacking on some carrot sticks during the movie. If you haven’t tried giving your dog carrots, you should. Packed with vitamins, they are a great snack for our canine friends. Just start with small quantities to make sure everything is fine — on both ends!
Every morning I get bombarded by our cat as soon as I enter our kitchen. Much like Chloe from the movie would do, she walks in front of me and steers me over to where she knows her treats are. So to say she loves her treats is an understatement.
There is an amazing list of kitty treat recipes at https://www.buzzfeed.com/samimain/cat-treats?crlt.pid=camp.oUbn8Nog6llC&utm_term=.hbJV0EDzz#.trEov4lLL. I’m not sure yet which one we’ll make but I’m sharing here so I always have the link.
DIY Pet Toys
And what is a party without some toys, amirite? Here are a few ideas for cat and dog toys that your kids can help you make as part of the party fun.
Our dog is large (about 50 lbs) and he is a chewer. Many of the cute DIY toys I’ve seen online wouldn’t last 10 minutes with him. Here are two DIY toys that seem simple enough to make and they might even pass the 10-minute threshold in our house.
- Tug & Toss toy: http://www.instructables.com/id/Y-SHAPED-DOG-TUG-TOSS-TOY/
- Chew toy made from old t-shirts: https://lvlyblog.com/2013/01/13/dog-toy/
Our cat doesn’t get to play too often before her big canine brother (who I’m sure means well) comes along and destroys her toys with one bite. This list of DIY cat items that kids can help make have toys and a cute pet bed idea to boot.
Time to share. Do you have any favourite pet treat recipes or DIY toy links? Share them below. And remember, The Secret Life of Pets is out on December 6. Grab your pet, cuddle up and have some fun.
