When Winter Takes It’s Toll

Winter, cold, dry, weather

See that picture above. It was taken back near the beginning of November. ‘Snow’ was a novelty and we were looking forward to the holidays with excitement. Look at all of that gorgeous, fluffy snow. It puts you in the Christmas spirit, makes for great photos, and provides hours of fun outside building snowmen and making snow angels.

That seems like a lifetime ago now. It almost is.

Winter, Morning, Sun rise

This above photo was taken in December. As winter drags on, the days get shorter, the weather gets colder and everything gets drier. Mostly I’m referring to my skin here.

This is usually when my skin gets very dry and I get patches of eczema on my hands. Always on both of my ring fingers, and it is so painful. It burns and stings and when it gets bad, everything hurts. It even gets to the point where I can’t wash dishes and I can almost feel the dry air sucking what moisture I have left out of my hands.

Weather, snow, white, cold

And this picture was taken in January. My daughter lying there in the snow sums up my feelings of winter now. I am defeated, discouraged and just done.

However, my hands are not. As a matter of fact, they are back to normal. Looking all moisturized and soft, and I have two things to thank for this; water and Polysporin. You see, I am really bad for drinking water, but I changed my bad habit this winter in an effort to hydrate from the inside out. It worked to a certain extent, but I needed a little more help, on the outside.

Enter Polysporin Eczema Essentials skin care line. This line includes a daily moisturizing cream, a daily body wash, and an Hydrocortisone anti-itch cream. Since my eczema was at its worst when I received these items to try out, I immediately started using everything. At the time, I passed by the wash as my hands were too sensitive for water and I opted to use the moisturizing cream. In hindsight, I should have just gone to the anti-itch cream for immediate relief as the moisturizing cream stung a bit as my fingers were so sore. The burning passed in a matter of minutes and I put the anti-itch cream on for the night.

I woke up in the morning and there was a big improvement. After the second day, my skin was looking almost normal. Now, I only put it on if I begin to feel my hands getting dry and you can’t tell by looking at a picture of my hand, which finger used to get it the worst. 20140204-211508.jpg

I love that this is available without a prescription as it is so difficult to get in to see my doctor now. My youngest daughter also gets eczema during the winter months and I used the cream on her and the next morning, her little legs were almost back to normal.

Without my two changes this winter, I have no doubt that I would be in pain right now. Winter is taking it’s toll on all of us right now, but my hands are doing fine.
