Cough & cold survival checklist for the Family

One of the worst things that crept up on us last year was when we realized that our daughter was coming down with a whopper of a cold at 10 o’clock at night, after almost everything was closed.

Heading to our local convenience store, we overpaid for items that we hoped would just get us through the night (and what a sleepless night it was).

Colds are an inevitable part of winter and your chance of having one in your house increases with the number of members who share your four walls. Here is a list of items that you may want to consider having on hand so you don’t get caught off guard and you can spend your time taking care of your sick family members rather than running around shopping.

Stock up on these items and prepare for the next cold to hit your family.

Many of these items you can buy slowly, and when you notice them going on sale. I check our London Drug flyers weekly and pick up cold relief items at good prices now. It beats paying almost double for a product that is almost half the size at a convenience store.

Cough & Cold Survival Checklist

  • Cold, Cough, and/or sinus medication (check package for appropriate age ranges)
  • Nighttime medicine (for the adults, we need to sleep too)
  • Cough syrup
  • Kids or adult Gravol (liquid or chewable form for kids)
  • All-natural cough syrup for kids (Boiron and Zarbee’s are good options)
  • Cough drops (aka cough candy)
  • Secaris nasal gel: because you can go from runny to dry and painful pretty quickly
  • thermometer
  • tissues
  • Vicks VapoRub
  • Hydralyte or other electrolyte solution (Pedialyte carries freezies that are great for kids)
  • Baggies and cloths: you can wet a cloth, fold it, insert it into a baggie and freeze it, then wrap it in a light cloth and use on foreheads for fevers
  • Vaporizer or humidifier: we have one anyway because our winters are extremely dry, but it is worth it to find one when they are on sale.
  • tea (preferably herbal, non-caffeinated)
  • apple juice
  • flat gingerale
  • chicken noodle soup
  • crackers (unsalted is better)
  • Jell-o (good for kids who might be feeling a little sick as well, easy to digest)
  • honey
  • Cleaning wipes: for surfaces that get coughed on. No need to spread it around.
  • Movies: If you can find a couple of old kids movies that your children haven’t seen yet save them for a rainy… er, sick day.

Maybe it’s the flu!

If you are unsure and your child’s symptoms are beginning to look like it might be something else, call your local health line if you have one. Once you have the flu, you can only let it run it’s course and take some OTC medications to ease the discomfort. Do your best to keep your child away from other children and out of hospitals unless it is absolutely necessary as many patients in hospitals don’t have a strong enough immune system to fight the flu.

Remember that one preventative option is to get the flu shot. Read up online for information and review your province’s health information to make the decision if it is right for you.
