Victoria Day Long Weekend and Wonder+ SimplyFree

Finally, the May long weekend is here. This long weekend always marks the beginning of summer for me. It is when I start to plant the garden and flower pots, and it is also when we start looking for garage sale signs when we are out and about.

Today also marks four more days left until we get to meet the newest member of our family. Being so close, I have mostly been taking it easy today. We ended up going out to a few garage sales and I picked up some books for Little Bird and Baby Bird. I also planted Little Bird’s mini tomato plant today and aside from a wonderful nap, that was about it for me.

My mom and dad are visiting and along with Papa Bird and Little Bird, they worked hard in the yard, played and relaxed. My dad ended up turning over the soil in our garden, and Papa Bird put in a border around some of the garden and grassed some sections of it. As you can see in this picture, my garden was starting to spill out and take over the yard.

I still have a lot of plants to go in the garden, but we still have two more days for that and I may wait a little longer for the tomato plants because I have a lot of heirloom tomatoes (again) that I don’t want to lose in the event of a late frost. This year, we will be planting the tomatoes (12 kinds), potatoes, peas, beans, asparagus, carrots, radishes, watermelon, strawberries, raspberries and ground cherries.

And what would a long weekend be without a barbecue? We barbecue year round, but there is just something about long weekends that takes barbecuing to new levels. Today we had jumbo hotdogs, potato salad and a bean salad.

This year, Weston Bakeries has a healthy alternative to hotdog and hamburger buns to compliment your long weekend feast. Wonder+ SimplyFree is the first Canadian National Brand of bakery products that is made with unbleached wheat flour and is free of artificial preservatives, flavours, colours and high fructose corn syrup.

Want to try out the new buns for yourself? Wonder+ has a coupon that you can reserve on their Facebook page. Simply ‘like’ them, then click on the ‘start now’ button and allow the app, then fill in your name and information. How a ‘progressive coupon’ works is that the more people who like them and the more people you get to like them, the more the value of the coupon goes up. You have until June 15, 2011 to like them and at the end, they will tabulate their likes and send out the coupons. The value of the coupon will range from a 50¢ off coupon to a Buy One, Get One Free (BOGO) depending on how many likes they get in the end.

You can also check out the Canadian Living, Summer Fun Comes Naturally website where they will be posting a total of ten recipes available throughout the summer. Right now, the first two are up on the site.

So we are now 1/3 of the way through our long weekend and I’m looking forward to relaxing for the next two days. How about you? How is your long weekend so far? What are your plans for the rest of it?

Disclosure – I am participating in the Wonder+ SimplyFree program by Mom Central Canada on behalf of Weston Bakeries. I received a gift card and free product coupons as a thank you for my participation. The opinions on this blog are my own.
