SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! on DVD

This post was written by Frank (AKA Mr. Bird’s Day). Our daughters share their love of SpongeBob with their dad.

I have to admit, as a parent I LOVE watching SpongeBob SquarePants with my four-year-old daughter. So when I heard everyone’s favorite talking sponge was going to be starring in his own Christmas special I was very excited.

SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! is a 22-minute stop-animation special. In it, Plankton vows to get his Christmas wish – the Krabby Patty formula – by turning everyone in Bikini Bottom bad by feeding them his special “jerktonium”-laced fruitcake.  Ultimately, if not unexpectedly, SpongeBob saves the day. Everyone’s favorite’s are in this special, including Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, etc. John Goodman guest stars as Santa.

I love the stop-animation of this feature. This is the same technique used in holiday classics like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The plot is also well thought out and the jokes are funny. Our whole family enjoyed watching this feature.

My only disappointment came in the length of the special – 22 minutes is the running time of a typical SpongeBob episode, but I was hoping for something a bit longer with this special.

The DVD includes two downloadable songs from the episode (Santa’s Eye and Hot Fruitcake) and a behind the scenes featurette.

Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Media Distribution, SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! has suggested retail price is $14.99, but it’s available at Amazon.ca for $9.99.

Disclosure: I received this DVD for free to complete my review. The opinions expressed in this post are mine only and are in no way influenced by any outside factors.
