Over the past few years, our family has been taking steps to lead a healthier lifestyle. My husband and I have always wanted to make better, healthier choices when it comes to what we eat. I say ‘wanted’ because we haven’t always succeeded.
Since our daughter came along, it wasn’t so much of a decision anymore. Eating healthy and making better choices just became a necessity and a way of life. Yes, we still have our junk food, but it has become more moderated and it is now considered a real ‘treat’ where before it was a convenience. For example, if we were out and there were potato chips on the shelf, we would buy it — convenience.
Some of the changes that we’ve made are:
- Grocery lists – when we go shopping, we write everything down that we need. If it isn’t on the list, we don’t buy it. We grocery shop every Wednesday night, so if we are planning a date night, or having friends over on the weekend, then we will write down ‘potato chips’. This has saved our waistlines and our wallets.
- Cut out Processed Cheese Slices – you know, the cheese that looks like plastic? I love them, I miss them, but we don’t have them in our house, and haven’t for about a year and a half.
- More Fiber – if we are still hungry at night, we usually reach for a bowl of high fiber cereal, or a high fiber granola bar instead of junk food. Although occasionally we will have stove popped pop corn.
- Less Salt – We purchase the canned goods that we need in the ‘low sodium’ versions and I find that they taste the same.
There are still lots we can do. I would love to find a way to walk as a family in the evenings – finding that time is difficult when we get home from work/daycare at 5:30 and it’s wind down for bedtime at 7:00 (not ours, Baby Bird’s).
Personally, I need to drink more water. I am working on that.
The Quaker Journey to Wellness Campaign focuses on the goals that many families have for leading healthier lives and making informed choices to live the best lives they can. A fellow blogger, Lynn has been chosen by Quaker to document her families struggles on their road to becoming a healthier family at Quaker Journey.
Lynn is a great blogger and this is a fun website to stop by for a read. There is also a Giveaway tab on the site where you can win free Quaker products weekly and monthly by participating by commenting, voting or sharing tips and ideas.
You can also ‘like’ Quaker Canada on Facebook to find out more. They also have a ‘contest’ and ‘coupon’ tab that you can check out to enter their most recent contests or to grab a coupon for their products.
