I remember my parents telling me not to rush being a kid. As a child, you just don’t understand the value of having no responsibility, and you often take for granted the times when you just get to play. As an adult, I am well aware that the hours in my day flies by, filled with chores and responsibility and it is hard to take some time for not only yourself, but to be THERE for your kids. Not in the same room knocking things off your to-do list, but actually sitting down and being 100% available for play time with your little ones. I know it is hard for me.
When did life get so ‘busy’? So busy that spending time with our kids and playing became the ‘chore’!
My husband has a great activity that he does with our girls and it is a wonderful bonding time for all of them. Papa Bird is an avid record (lps) collector (note to anyone out there with old rock and/or heavy metal records to sell, email me) so he has started including our girls in his love of music and all things vinyl. Little Bird loves to dance and she loves a lot of kids shows and movies, so we’ve picked up some old kids records (Disney, etc) from garage sales and thrift stores for them to listen to. They are the kid’s records and our oldest gets to handle those all she wants. This way, my husband can still keep his own collection in good shape.
They spend time cleaning their records and looking through all of them, then they put them on the turntable and the real fun begins. Dancing all over the basement, they pretend to do ballet and jump around. Our daughter has such a love for music and dance and she understands that there is a kid’s collection, and a grown up collection. She is becoming a huge fan of KISS as well, or as she calls them, the clowns with makeup!
This is a great way for Papa Bird to connect with our girls over something that he is really interested in and it makes play time for all of them really interesting and fun.
