I am always inspired to see people living out their dreams, and so it was a delight to watch Will Stroet and his Backyard Band in action at K-Days. Will Stroet is a teacher by training and children’s musician by passion! He can be seen on Kids’ CBC “Will’s Jams” and he performs throughout Canada – already surpassing in July the total number of performances he did last year, in addition to making new videos and CDs! All that and he didn’t even look tired!
I took my three children ages 7, 5 and 3 to watch Will’s show and help “interview” him. We had watched his videos ahead of time and were immediately hooked! After watching him on video, the kids were excited to see him in person! The live show did not disappoint! Despite that he covers serious topics such as nutrition, reading, bike safety, hygiene and more, his songs are fun and catchy.
The clever lyrics keep adults interested and amused, and are also engaging for older children. All of the kids and adults were on their feet dancing and participating! Will took the time to explain words and teach the actions before starting the songs so that everyone could have a successful experience. His set was nicely paced with a good mix of action and listening, and the tempo of his songs allowed the kids to keep up without losing the energetic vibe.
Here were our hard-hitting interview questions:
7yo: Comment-as-tu appris a parler en Francais?
Will attended French Immersion throughout his schooling. He has CDs in both English and French.
5yo: Did you teach kindergarten?
Will taught music with students in kindergarten through to Grade 7, which eventually led to him discovering this calling of writing and performing music for children. Will’s website includes links to a detailed Study Guide with lyrics, actions and activities for parents or teachers.
3yo: What is your favourite part of being a rock star?
Will explained that he is not a “rock” star since he sings kids’ songs but rather is a “pebble” star! This is in fact the name of his company: Pebble Star Productions.
Will’s music would be well received by children of all ages and abilities AND their parents! My kids said the “pebble” concert was “AH-MAZ-ING!” Before bed, I ask my kids to thank God for something and choose someone to pray for; here’s what my 5yo had to say tonight: “I thank God for Will Stroet and I pray for him too.” Can’t get much better than that!
Will Stroet, you have great songs, you gave a great performance and you obviously had a positive impact on my kids. AND I can’t get “Full of Beans” out of my head!
If you are attending K-Days with kids, make a point of attending one of Will’s concerts! Upcoming show times for Will Stroet and his Backyard Band are:
July 26 & 27 at 2:30, 4:30 & 8 p.m.
July 28 at 2:30, 4:30 & 5:30 p.m.
