Book Review: Inspire Me Well #yeg

We all know we need to eat better, exercise more, get enough sleep and (insert thing you should be doing here, but are not), but knowing and doing are two completely different things.

For me, I know I need to do all of the above, but right now, my brain is programmed and stuck on ‘I’ll start tomorrow’, and that’s just the thing. When I keep saying that, tomorrow never comes. If I’d have started yesterday, then I’d be on my way, stepping out of my comfort zone. If I’d started last year, I’d probably be really close to my goal now and, if I start today, then I would be standing at the edge of my abyss, looking at all of the mountains in front of me and I’d be forced to face something that I really don’t want to.

So my problem isn’t knowing, its doing.

Inspire_Me_Well_CoverI realized this about half way through reading Inspire Me Well by Edmonton authors Lisa Bélanger and Sarah O’Hara.

For a little background, Lisa is the owner of Exceed Wellness, a PhD candidate at the University of Alberta, and a certified exercise physiologist from the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology. Sarah is a Registered Dietician and together they share their stories along with other stories to help inspire you to make the choices you know you need to.

Many of the stories come from fellow Edmontonians and cover various situations including surviving cancer, overcoming abuse, and training for a cause. Topics like healthy eating, activity, sleep and stress are also discussed.

I’ve found inspiration while reading this book. So much so that many of the pages are folded over and sections are starred so I can quickly flip back to them for quick moments of inspiration. Great quotes fills this book, such as “I realized that when I woke up I just expected my body to function without continuously working at it and fueling it properly” and “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now”.

I need motivation to eat better. I’m training to run two half-marathons one week after the next and I’m good at eating healthy the day before a long run or a race but need to do better in between!!
