August Long Weekend

The summer in our city has been rainy. I don’t mind a little light rain here and there, but this was over the top. So when this weekend rolled around and all signs pointed to sunny, we were so excited to get our long weekend barbecue game faces on.

This weekend, it was all about the burgers. Papa Bird makes a mean homemade burger and with a combination of the rain and me being pregnant/us being new parents, this is the first long weekend that we got to enjoy a one-of-a-kind Dad Burger, and it was heaven.

This summer we began using Wonder+ SimplyFree hotdog and hamburger buns. With each bite our daughter takes, I know they are made with no artificial preservatives, flavours or colours. Every little bit helps when I am trying to balance my diet while still getting to enjoy all of the summer flavours I remember as a child.

If you are not sure about making your own burger there are a lot of great recipes on the Canadian Living website along with some Better BBQ Tips.

As for our plans, we were al over the place, but our theme this weekend was our budget. Since I am on maternity leave, we have to make sure we watch the money we spend so we planned our weekend accordingly.

We went to a couple of garage sales on Saturday. Our kids nap really well in the car, so we packed them up and headed out for a drive. They napped and we had a chance to drink our coffee and talk about what we wanted to do for the rest of the weekend. Papa Bird is a vinyl (record) collector so he is always looking for garage sales where people are parting with their classics.

We took a couple of trips to our local playground, worked and played in the yard and I cleaned out our den to make room for company that will be staying with us this next weekend. We also ended up going to the zoo and had a lot of fun walking around there.

We spent some time inside and ended up watching some old family movies of when our oldest was a baby. It was fun for her to see herself at the same age that our youngest is at now.

I fell asleep last night completely content and tired from a wonderful long weekend filled with lots of laughs and good food.

How about you? What did you do on the long weekend?

No long weekend here in Wisconsin, but it sure SEEMED long! Daughter was in a play Thursday through Saturday night, a bridal shower for a niece and shopping for a baby shower after, then Sunday was spent catching up with long overdue piles of laundry. Was still working on pulling down a border in a bedroom as we make way for baby. Gonna’ move all three kids around so it’s a mean game of “musical rooms” right now. The hardware store is gonna be sick of mixing our paints!
So nice to hear you had some down time and fun! I used to love weekends with family but now with kids in so many sports, we hardly get to relax and read the Sunday paper!

Wow – you guys are crazy busy with renos. When we first moved to this city 6 years ago, we bought a real fixer upper, then sold it for our ‘now’ house. After awhile we just couldn’t handle doing really serious renos. Now we get to ‘tinker’ – lol.

Nice to hear about your long weekend and glad papa bird can spend all weekends with you now. We spent part of the long weekend in Winnipeg, then on Sunday came back to spend more time at Riding Mountain National park. Had exceptional weather here.

    Love Mom & Dad Fuller
